No SmokingIt is, as much, a house as a work of industrial art. The house is built around a large concrete waterway, which was originally part of the Winthrop water supply. That bunker is now the floor of an upper bedroom, as well as the walls of the living room and a second bedroom on the main floor. It is a hand-built, handmade riverfront pleasure.
Located about 1/3 mile downstream of downtown Winthrop and its iconic Old West boardwalk... it is close yet private. This is a “one-of-a-kind experience” not to be passed over.
There are two bedrooms. The first bedroom includes a queen bed, and the second a queen and a bunk bed. The main-floor master has its own bath and an outside entrance overlooking the river. Full kitchen, internet, unique wood stove, heated floors, patio with picnic table and small propane grill. If the bedroom-to-living-space door is left open and a window in the dining area is open, it works quite well for cooling. And if you need a little more room, there is another wondrous house, for friends, called River Nest. Check it out.

Great location, cool house, remarkably peaceful. I was a bit worried about privacy/noise given the proximity to the pizza place and other rental properties, but the way things are laid out it feels like you are far away from the world. When sitting out on the patio all you can hear is the wind, the water, and the birds.

My family and I were in Winthrop for our son’s hockey tournament. We loved the house, the location was perfect. We really enjoyed the wood stove and coziness of the home. The view of the river is peaceful. We will be back!!

Peaceful, private, close to restaurants and shops. George’s River House had everything we needed. We got to meet George when he stopped by to give us a few tomatoes from the garden. Wonderful all around.

We loved our stay here. It was such a beautiful location. We enjoyed the pizza from the pizzeria behind the house one of the evenings. And one of the mornings when I woke up, I had a huge smile on my face after seeing the flowing stream of water right from the bedroom!!!!
Amazing home and perfect location. Convenient for shopping, hiking, and chilling by the river. Very private. Super clean and nicely supplied kitchen tools, etc.

The house was lovely and unique, a great fit to enjoy the town of Winthrop and the surrounding outdoor pursuits. The house was well stocked for our group of 6. We would definitely stay there again!
